Jenny Lee

Home Session, Single Channel Video, Stereo Sound, 12:58 min, 2024

Resting our heads on each other’s laps, we gently stroke one another’s hair, and as we move across the sofa, the space fills with spontaneous movements. While it may resemble the rituals between my mother and me, it could also be a conversation or a form of play, leaving people uncertain about whether it is dialogue or solitary monologue, reflecting on time and life with a calm demeanor occasionally tinged with a wry smile.

Jenny is a multidisciplinary artist primarily working with film/video, projection, installation, sculpture, photography, and performance, based in Seoul, Korea and Chicago, IL. She explores the use of body, space, time, the feeling of alienation or familiarity, absence, or communication, as well as questions about interaction and interpersonal trust between people. She received her BFA from University of California, Los Angeles in 2018 and MFA from School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s FVNMA department in 2023.

Her work has been exhibited or screened internationally in Berkeley, Los Angeles, Chicago, Vancouver, Seoul, and Gimpo. She was accepted into the Monson Arts residency program and nominated as a candidate for Hyde Park Art Center’s biennial exhibition, Ground Floor 2024. She was also featured on Comfort Station’s Artist to Watch list in both 2023 and 2024. Additionally, she was selected for having a solo exhibition at Archive Space JUNSIJANG in Seoul, Korea.

你能認出圖形、動作、聲音、音樂、效果……眼前的一切都是那麼具體化,但組合起來之後又變得抽象了,那麼,你真正了解自己的多少呢?

Peixuan Ouyang

The___________World, Digital Video, TRT 17:55, 2021

A personal essay about connection and disconnection, in and through different realities.

Peixuan Ouyang is interested in how images infiltrate and mediate everyday life, and how humans negotiate with the world and connect with each other through images. Peixuan’s projects primarily live through light and sometimes land on tangible surfaces, whether as film, video, prints, books, installations, or a combination thereof. Many projects explore the intersections of monumentality, globalization, and the absurdity of living.

Gordon
sixty-six seconds from small wonders of life, single-channel video loop, stereo sound, 12’06”

(2023–ongoing)—S2E3_From The Loneliest Road in America (excerpt)

Encapsulating 66 seconds of static shots, this ongoing video work captures small wonders around the artist’s roadtrips and daily lives. The seemingly boring stillness invites viewers to contemplate by slowing down and doing “nothing.” It encourages audiences to examine ways to enjoy one’s life gracefully by and with oneself.

Gordon Fung (b. 1988, San Francisco, CA; lives in Chicago, IL) is a transdisciplinary artist-curator who works with large-scale curatorial/collaborative practices, experimental audiovisual performances, new media installations, noise music, experimental film/video, media archaeology, participatory works, and happenings.

Maya
Crossroads [11:57] — video, paper, story, time

Maya Roussell is a multimedia artist working in video projections, installation and live media activations. Concerned with intergenerational memory, her work engages public and familial archive, somatic knowledge, oral histories, destructive and constructive collage, and the sociohistorical residue that clings to our bodies and the spaces they occupy. Through material and bodily evocations, Roussell calls upon her spirits and those of the nation’s collective past, collapsing linear concepts of time and reorienting herself amongst its fragments.

description of the piece:

Maya Roussell

Crossroads explores shared familial recollection following the Louisiana Creole participation in the U.S. Great Migration (c. 1950’s), which led the artist’s grandmother to uproot her life in New Orleans in search of better opportunity in L.A. Through found media archive, oral history and the intrinsic spaces of inherited memory, Roussell considers the points where imagination meets reality, and where the present meets remnants the past left behind, as she returns to New Orleans decades after her grandmother left.

Sayera Anwar
Bachpan Ka Mela (Childhood Street Festival) | 2020 | Video Art | 03:25

Bachpan Ka Mela (Childhood Street Festival) is about reminiscence. It is a celebration of a fond memory of my 80-year-old maternal grandmother, Jamila, where she lays on a charpai and recounts an old tale, all the while instinctively fixing a ball of yarn in preparation for embroidery, a craft she learned from her mother. In the video, Jamila fondly recounts the story of having visited a mela (fair) as a child in her hometown, Jalandhar, India. This was before her family was forced to migrate due to the 1947 India-Pakistan Partition. Being two generations younger, I have always known her as a woman nourished by decades of wisdom. This story, however, takes me on a journey where I begin to understand the free-spirited child that resides within her.

Sayera Anwar (b.1995; Pakistan) lives and works in Chicago. In 2018, Anwar completed her Bachelor’s in Visual Arts from the Beaconhouse National University, Lahore. In 2024, she finished her Masters in Fine Arts from The Art Institute of Chicago, where she was granted the prestigious New Artist Society Merit Scholarship award. In her interdisciplinary practice, she explores the theme of home, borders, and otherness through her initial interest in the Pakistan-India Partition and now within her diasporic experiences.

In the past three years, Anwar has been nominated and selected for the artist residencies, such as Duje Pase ton ( From the Other Side) commissioned by the South Asian Canadian Histories Association, and VASL’s annual artist residency- Taaza Tareen’13 in Karachi, Pakistan. Her work has been shown at the Full Circle Gallery in Karachi (2021), the SITE Gallery in Chicago (2023), and Convergence in Flux, South Asia Institute, Chicago (2024).
